A two-day marine chronometer by Thomas Mercer of St. Albans, 1971.

4 inch slivered dial with black Arabic numeral, fusee movement, Earnshaw escapement and Mercer's standard balance with steel spring and jewelled detent.

Glazed mahogany box with gimbal mount.

Thomas Mercer Chronometer makers. A company founded by Thomas Mercer (1822-1900). Following his death the business was continued by the Mercer family.

Thomas Mercer trained as a chronometer maker in London with John Fletcher of Lombard Street and in the 1850,s set up in business in Clerkenwell. In about 1875 the business moved to St. Albans to a newly built factory which became one of the world's largest makers of marine chronometers.
