Ships metacentric balance by Stanley

£1800

A rare cased metacentric G. M. balance made by Stanley of London for the SS Ayrshire.

The portable metacentric balance stands on a mahogany base with spirit level, four leveling screws at each corner, and an ivorine plaque inscribed: Heights above top keel at different positions fore & aft for guidance when dealing with partly filled 'tween decks & deck cargo. The central brass and invorine beam, scaled proportionally to the depth of the vessel, is suspended from three davits, the two side davits support the beam, the central davit is utilised for balancing the beam by means of the sprung lever, when pressed it lifts the beam which denotes the centre of gravity of the vessel. The balance can be disassembled and packed back in to its case.

Scale of beam:  ½ “ = 1 Foot.

Fitted mahogany case numbered 26, with blue velvet lined interior, and a loading diagram of SS Ayrshire, scale 1/20" = 1 foot, inside lid.

Case dimensions: 11 cm x 73 cm x 15 cm.

Patent No: 14704. Date of patent application, 10th July 1908 "Apparatus for Determining the Metacentric Height of a Ship in any condition of Loading".
